Proteomics and metabolomics, like many fields of science, are driven by technological change. Scientists have studied proteins and metabolites for over 100 years, but the development of modern analytical techniques, such as mass spectrometry, now allows the characterisation and quantitation of proteins and metabolites on a vast scale. This new ability, to probe the hidden chemical world of cells and tissues, is expanding our understanding of biology in ways that will eventually provide improved medicines, diagnostic techniques and more efficient agriculture.
The education section of the PMV website aims to share the excitement of this biological revolution with the general public.
